Summit Background

Since the summer of 2013 the Partnership for Age-Friendly Communities has been working to engage Larimer County stakeholders in collaborative efforts to accommodate and benefit from the growing population of boomers and retired seniors. This Summit reflects the progress of these efforts and provides an opportunity for attendees to participate in the continuing design and development of a community that is a great place to grow up and grow old.

Right here

in Larimer County, the population over age 65 will grow 140% and retiree spending will almost TRIPLE over the next 20 years. The Larimer County Summit on Aging will pave the way for understanding how this major demographic shift will affect employees, employers, developers, businesses, health care, and our over all quality of life. Join the Partnership for Age-Friendly Communities for this day long event designed to help our communities prepare for a future where Larimer County is recognized as an innovative leader in defining livable communities for healthy aging in the 21st century.

Since January 2011, more than 10,000 Baby Boomers have been turning 65 nationwide every day, a pattern that will continue for almost 20 years. Representing nearly one-third of our population and two-thirds our nation’s financial assets, Baby Boomers are expected to change the definition of retirement: they will live longer, be more active, spend more, save less, keep working, and do more volunteering.

Larimer County is now the 5th fastest growing 65+ population in Colorado. We have a reputation for being an ideal community for citizens to live, age, and embrace a better quality of life. Fort Collins and Loveland are consistently nationally ranked as the best places in the United States to retire. But in the face of demographic change, we need to plan how our community will continue to be a great place for our older residents.
